River
Arrabo Flumen
Győr
Listen to the story
Arrabo Flumen, the river Arrabo, is all the Tabula writes here: a bare name with no picture, standing for the town at the river's mouth. A Roman register of routes calls that town Arrabona, and it lies beneath Győr in Hungary, where the Rába joins the Danube. From the middle of the first century AD a cavalry fort stood on the Káptalan hill, later home to a thousand-strong regiment of lancers guarding the frontier against the Quadi and Suebi across the river. In AD 137 a statue was dedicated here to the emperor Hadrian, and roads from Sabaria and Sopianae ended at the town.
