Armoniacum flumen

Oued Mafragh

Listen to the story

Armoniacum flumen, the Armoniacum river, is today's Oued Mafragh, a coastal river in eastern Algeria that reaches the sea between ancient Hippo Regius, modern Annaba, and Thabraca, modern Tabarka. The map gives it only a name, with no picture, marking the point where the coast road crossed the water. The Roman writer Pliny knew it as the Armua and listed it among the landmarks of the Numidian shore, between Hippo Regius and the town of Roman citizens at Thabraca. A list of places compiled in Ravenna records it too, as Armonaca and Armoniocus.
