River

Ausere Flumen

Wadi Fessi (Libya · Tunisia)

Listen to the story

Ausere Flumen was a coastal river flowing into the Lesser Syrtes, the gulf off Gabès in Africa Proconsularis, and it is usually identified with the Wadi Fessi on the border of Tunisia and Libya, though an older identification preferred the Oued Neffatia. The map gives its name without a symbol, with the river itself drawn above. A Roman military road from Tacape, modern Gabès, crossed it twenty-five Roman miles, about thirty-seven kilometres, from Augarmi. A list of places compiled in Ravenna records a settlement called Auceritis here.
