Caput Fluminis Selliani

Daugava

Listen to the story

Caput Fluminis Selliani means the source of the river Sellianus, and caput was the regular Latin word for the spring from which a river rises. The map sets it in Scythia, and the river is identified with the Daugava. On the map the word appears only for three rivers in this area, perhaps to show that they should be read as flowing down the map rather than up. The river seems to be a tributary of the neighbouring one, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna knows a people called the Selliantes.
