River

Drinum Fluvius

Brodac

Listen to the story

Drinum fluvius, the river Drina, marks a road station on the Tabula, just a name with no picture on the highway along the Sava between Sirmium and Saldis. The stop probably lay where the road met the Drina near its mouth, at Brodac near Bijeljina in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The geographer Ptolemy knew the river as flowing into the Sava, and it was once seen as the border between Moesia and Illyricum. One distance beside it reads eighteen miles, which seemed too short, until a photograph of the map revealed a faded stroke turning the figure into twenty-three.
