River

Fl. Aceloum] (Miller) oder [Fl. Aciloum

Acheloos, zwischenzeitlich Aspropotamos und Aspros

Listen to the story

The Achelous, the longest and most water-rich river of Greece, crosses the Tabula without a name; only the road station of the same name at its crossing identifies it. The map draws it running fairly straight to the southwest, while the real river winds southwards in countless bends. Its mouth opens the Corinthian Gulf, just as the Greek geographer Strabo described, and in imperial times it divided the provinces of Epirus and Achaia. Strabo also tied Heracles' taming of its delta to the myth of the hero breaking off the river god's horn, honoured afterwards as the horn of plenty.
