River
Fl. Amasenus/Fl. Ufens
Amaseno · Uffente
Listen to the story
A river drawn without a name here in Latium is either the Amasenus or the Ufens, now the Amaseno and the Uffente in Italy. Scholars disagree about which one is meant, and the map may, as so often, have merged the two into a single line. Both rise in the Volscian mountains and reach the Tyrrhenian Sea between Circeii and Terracina. Their sluggish waters fed the Pontine Marshes, where the Via Appia crossed the Ufens on a two-arched bridge. In 318 BC Rome named one of its citizen tribes after the Ufens, and the poet Virgil mentions both rivers.
