River
Fl. Aranus o. Fl. Alutus
Aranyos o. Aluta · Alt · Olt (Miller)
Whether this river is the Alutus or the Aranus depends on how you read the map, for it is drawn without any name. It is one of four rivers running down from the Carpathians into the Danube. Because it sits beside the road to Napoca, today's Cluj, it could be the Aranus, the Arieș, which a traveller had to cross just before reaching that town. Scholars have argued instead that the four streams were borrowed from a world map and have nothing to do with the roads. They would then be tributaries of the Danube in Wallachia, and this one the Alutus, the Olt in Romania. The geographer Ptolemy likewise names four rivers flowing from the Carpathians, among them the Alutus.
