River
Fl. Bilis
Kocaman Dereis · Kocaman Dere
Listen to the story
The river known as Flumen Bilis runs across the map unnamed; its name is reconstructed from the road station at its mouth, from a Byzantine dictionary of places and from a list of places compiled in Ravenna. Greek sailing guides to the Black Sea knew it as the Elaios, with a trading post beside it, first recorded by Menippus of Pergamon in the first century BC. Today it is generally identified with the Kocaman Dere in Turkey. The copyist's road makes its zigzag just before the crossing, so the river cuts into the next stretch, and an unwary reader could take that stretch's river name for this one.
