River

Fl. Calidon

Kortouga, 2 km nördl. von Evinochorion

Listen to the story

Calidon is the name scholars give to a river the map draws without any label, in the south of the Balkans. Its only other witness is a list of places compiled in Ravenna, which drew on the same source as the Tabula and names three rivers crossing the region: Calidon, Evenos and Achilois. No river called Calidon is otherwise known, only the ancient city of Calydon on the left bank of the Evenos, near today's Evinochorion in Greece. Scholars therefore suspect that a town was mistaken for a river.
