River
Fl. Cydnus o. Fl. Calycadnus
Tarsus Çayı oder eher Göksu
Listen to the story
This river, drawn without a name on the Cilician coast, was once taken for the Cydnus, the river of Tarsus, but it is more probably the Calycadnus, now the Göksu in Turkey. The Cydnus really flows through Tarsus, and the map sets that city much further along. The Calycadnus fits better, because Seleucia, the city near its mouth, is marked right beside the river. It was the most important river of Rough Cilicia, which the Roman historian Ammianus called rich in water and navigable at Seleucia, and Greek writers knew it from the fourth century BC.
