River

Fl. Drilo

heute Drini, Albanien · Drin Mazedonien

Listen to the story

An unnamed river leaving Lake Ohrid near the town of Lychnidus is identified as the Drilo, the Drin of modern Albania. Together with a mountain range, it probably marks the edge of Illyricum, a region the map never names. Its course is drawn back to front: the river runs off into the mountains to the right without a single tributary, exactly opposite to its real flow towards the Adriatic. The Greek geographer Strabo called it navigable eastwards as far as Dardania, and Roman writers often confused it with the Drina, whose upper valley almost reaches its own.
