Fl. Dravus

Drau · Drava

Listen to the story

The river Dravus, the modern Drava, runs prominently across the map, yet the copyist gave it no name. The Roman writer Pliny had it rising in the Noric Alps near Aguntum and called it navigable, and it met the Danube at Mursa in Pannonia, where it served as an important route for traffic and was worshipped as a river god. On the Tabula its upper course strays: it flows past Sabaria and seems to be confused with the Raab. This may be because the geographer Ptolemy called the northern stretch of the river Savarias.
