Fl. Druentia

Listen to the story
The Druentia, today's Durance in southern France, flows across the map without a label; its Latin name was supplied by modern editors. The map draws it rising from an unnamed mountain, and it was known as a left-hand tributary of the Rhône, rising in the Cottian Alps and joining the larger river near Avignon. The geographer Strabo and the Roman writer Pliny knew it as a violent torrent, and the historian Livy traced Hannibal's march along its banks. Inscriptions mention the boatmen of the Durance, and in late antiquity forts guarded the region.
