River

Fl. Eurymedon

Köprü Çay

Listen to the story

The Eurymedon, now the Köprü Çay in southern Turkey, crosses the map without a name, so its identity is a matter of probability. Two other rivers of Pamphylia have been proposed, but the Eurymedon fits best: on the map it reaches the sea just to the left of Side, close to Aspendos, the town up to which ships could sail on it. In reality it flows southwards from the Taurus mountains; the mapmaker turned it to suit the long, narrow roll. On its banks, in 465 BC, the Athenians under Cimon defeated the Persian army and fleet.
