River

Fl. Drilo

Drini · Drin

Listen to the story

The river Drin in Albania is the ancient Drilo, though on the Tabula it flows without any name at all; scholars have supplied it. The real river is complicated. It is born where the White Drin from Kosovo meets the Black Drin flowing out of Lake Ohrid, and it reaches the Adriatic south of Lissus. The map ignores all this and draws a single stream rising in a nameless range of mountains and meeting the sea near Scodra, today Shkodër. The Greek geographer Strabo called it navigable eastward as far as Dardania, and Roman writers confused it with the Drina, whose upper course nearly reaches its valley.
