Lissum

Lezha · Lezhë

Lissum is Lissus, today Lezhë in Albania, a harbour town on the Drin crowned by a steep acropolis, Acrolissus. In the treaty of 228 BC between Rome and the Illyrians it marked the line beyond which no more than two unarmed Illyrian ships might sail south. Philip the Fifth of Macedon seized it, the Illyrian kings won it back, and in the civil war Caesar's fleet lay here; in 48 BC he rebuilt its walls, and in 33 BC it became a Roman colony. On the map two roads leave it, one inland towards Naissus and one to Pistum.
