Libarnum

Serravalle Scrivia

Libarnvm is Libarna, near Serravalle Scrivia in Piedmont, a town on the Via Postumia that the Roman writer Pliny calls a noble town. Its excavated remains include a theatre, an amphitheatre, baths, a forum, an aqueduct and whole blocks of houses. On the map its distance to Genoa over the Apennines reads sixteen Roman miles, but the Roman register of routes gives thirty-six, which matches the road: a copyist seems to have taken the first twenty for part of the figure at Ad Figlinas, spoiling both numbers at once.
