Leucopetram

Pellaro · Capo dell'Armi (Calabria, Italy)

Listen to the story

Leucopetram, the white rock, is the pale promontory of Capo dell'Armi near Pellaro, just before Reggio, where the Apennines drop steeply into the sea; a small settlement stood here where sailors waited for a fair wind to round the cape. In the summer after Caesar's murder, Cicero set sail from Leucopetra for Greece, was driven back, and returned to Rome to take on Mark Antony. For Greek sailors the white cliff was a landmark on the route to Sicily.
