Lepidoregio

Reggio Emilia

Listen to the story

Lepidoregio is Regium Lepidi, now Reggio Emilia, the town of Lepidus: the consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, who built the Via Aemilia, founded it in 175 BC as a market on his road, halfway between Modena and Parma, and the road still forms its main street. The Roman historian Tacitus reports an omen from here: on the day of the battle of Bedriacum in 69 AD, a bird never seen before settled in a busy grove near the town.
