Listen to the story
Flumen Danubius, the Danube, runs across a vast stretch of the Tabula, yet nowhere along its course does it carry a label. Its name turns up only at the very end, in the words for the mouths of the Danube, beside a station called Ad Stoma, Greek for “at the mouth”. The map lets the river rise from a range of hills that can only be the Swabian Alb. The Roman writers Tacitus and Pliny placed its source on Mount Abnoba, and the historian Ammianus counted sixty navigable tributaries and seven mouths. The geographer Ptolemy knew it by its Greek name, Istros, as well.
