River

Fl. Clisius?

Listen to the story

The river known, with a question mark, as the Clisius has no name of its own on the map. It borrows one from the Lacus Clisius, the Alpine lake from which the Tabula shows it springing. From there its line runs down, cuts the road between Eporedia and Vitricium, modern Ivrea and Verrès in the Aosta valley, and ends in the Po. Which real stream is meant is disputed, and the damaged drawing makes it harder to tell. It may be the Lys, a torrent coming down from Monte Rosa, or perhaps the Dora Baltea. Either way, the map's layout fits the real rivers poorly.
