River

Fl. Evvenos (Flumen Euenos)

Fidhari oder Fidharo

Listen to the story

The river Euenos is drawn on the Tabula without a label; its name is known only from the road station of the same name where the road crossed it. Today it is the Fidhari in Aetolia, western Greece. The map simplifies its course, yet allowing for the squeezed proportions, the rough direction is right. In reality it runs through narrow gorges, unnavigable inland, and reaches the Gulf of Patras in a broad delta near Calydon. The Greek geographer Strabo records an older name, Lykormas, and ancient writers tie the river to the myth of Heracles killing the centaur Nessus.
