River

Fl. (H)alex / Fl. Kaikinos

Alice · Fiumara di Melito

Listen to the story

The river read as the Halex or the Kaikinos runs across the map without a name, flowing down from an equally nameless mountain towards the coast of southern Italy. Both candidates served as border rivers between the Greek cities of Rhegion and Locri, and the map may well have merged the two into a single line. The Halex, now the Alice near Melito in Calabria, passed through a deep gorge, and the Greek geographer Strabo records a curiosity there: cicadas sang on the Locrian side and fell silent on the Rhegine bank. The historian Thucydides names both rivers during an Athenian campaign against Locri in 426 BC.
