River
Fl. Haliakmon] (Miller) oder [Axius]?
Haliakmon oder Vardar
Listen to the story
This river, drawn without a name, is usually taken for the Haliacmon, though it may just as well be the Axius, today's Vardar, the main river of Macedonia. Neither fits well: the Haliacmon runs too far south and west, the Axius too far north, although both flow into the Thermaic Gulf. The map shortens the course drastically and seems to let it reach the sea near Nicaea, far from either real river. The Axius rises in the Šar mountains, probably the unnamed range drawn nearby, and between 168 and 148 BC it divided two of the districts into which Rome had split Macedonia. Some scholars even suspect the Peneius.
