River
Fl. Hyppium
Melen Çayı
Listen to the story
The river Hyppium has no name written beside it on the Tabula; it is identified only because the road station where the route crosses its water is named after it. Today it is the Melen Çayı in Turkey, running from the mountains of the same name to the Black Sea through a lake that the map leaves out. The poet Apollonius of Rhodes called it deep-flowing, and its navigable lower reaches served as a waterway to the sea. The historian Memnon describes its mouth as a bay large enough to shelter a fleet. The town of Prusias, modern Düzce, stood on its banks, though the map places it wrongly and garbles its name.
