River

Fl. Halys

Kızıl İrmak · Kızılırmak

Listen to the story

The Halys, now the Kızılırmak in Turkey, winds across the map without a written name, yet it is very probably this river, the longest in Asia Minor. The Greek geographer Strabo linked its name to the salt beds it flows past. In antiquity it was famous as a frontier, above all the one the Lydian king Croesus crossed. The map draws only its lower course, roughly true to its real shape, springing from a nameless mountain that in reality lies much further east. And instead of bordering Paphlagonia, the river runs straight through it.
