River
Fl. Genesis
Shkumbini
Listen to the story
The river Genesis, now the Shkumbin in Albania, carries no label of its own on the Tabula. Its name comes from two road stations called after it, one near its mouth and one further upstream, where the Via Egnatia followed its valley. Julius Caesar led his army across it during the civil war and remarked on its difficult banks, while the poet Lucan called it swift. Another Roman writer made it the boundary between the lands of Dyrrachium and Apollonia. The map also suggests that its lower course once ran differently from the present river.
