River
Fl. Anio
Aniene
Listen to the story
The Anio, now the Aniene in central Italy, flows across the Tabula as a carefully drawn line that was simply never given a name. Its course is traced in detail: it rises in the mountains beside the two-towered picture of Tibur, now Tivoli, where the real river plunges over famous waterfalls, then crosses the Via Nomentana, passes Fidenae on the Via Salaria and joins the Tiber just above Rome. The Roman writer Pliny called it navigable, and boats carried travertine from quarries on its banks to Rome's building sites. Two of the city's aqueducts bore its name.
