Farfar Flumen

Fiume Farfa

Listen to the story

Farfar Flumen is the river Farfa, a small left-bank tributary of the Tiber that comes down from the Sabine mountains and, after about forty-five kilometres, meets the Tiber opposite Mount Soracte. The map gives it only a name with no picture, and it probably marks not the river itself but the bridge, or the road station at the bridge, where travellers crossed it. The poets Ovid and Silius Italicus knew the river, while Virgil, needing a different rhythm for his verse, reshaped its name into Fabaris.
