River

Crater Fluvius

Listen to the story

Crater Fluvius appears as a bare name on the road, with no drawing, as if it were a road station, probably the bridge or the stop at the bridge over the river Crathis, today the Crati in Calabria, whose water, legend said, could dye hair blond. The map is puzzling here: the road does not really cross that river, and the map lets the river run into the Tyrrhenian Sea instead of the Gulf of Taranto. Scholars think a mapmaker mistook the river's name, written at its source, for a station and slipped it in before Consentia.
