Foro Novo

Sant‘ Arcangelo Trimonte [Pleiades]

Listen to the story

Foro Novo, the new market, was a station on the Via Traiana in the hills of the Hirpini on the way to Beneventum, perhaps at Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte or Montemale. The pilgrim from Bordeaux passed it as Forno Novo, which sounds like a new oven, and the list of places compiled in Ravenna notes that it bordered the territory of Beneventum. On the map, a line from here to an unnamed town is probably a mistake, most likely added by a copyist.
