Foro Popili

Polla

Listen to the story

Foro Popili is Forum Popilii, at Polla in the Tanagro valley, founded by the consul Publius Popilius Laenas, who built the road from Capua to Rhegium around 132 BC. His building inscription survives here, set into the wall of an inn: it lists the distances along the new road and records that he laid out a forum. Nearby the river Tanagro vanishes underground for a stretch. On the map the roads around it are badly tangled.
