Abellino

Atripalda bei Avellino [3 · Pleiades] · La Cività [4]

Listen to the story

Abellino is Abellinum, at La Civita near Atripalda, just outside Avellino, which inherited its name. It stood on a terrace above the river Sabato, on the border of Samnium and Campania, and received Roman colonists more than once, under Sulla, Augustus and Severus Alexander. Its walls, baths and amphitheatre survive, and an aqueduct ran from here all the way to Misenum. An earthquake in 346 AD and a volcanic eruption in 472 led to the town being abandoned.
