Abodiaco

Epfach

Listen to the story

Abodiacum, now Epfach on the Lech in Upper Bavaria, appears twice on the map, once on each of two roads, and the doubling probably marks the crossroads where the road over the Brenner met the road from Salzburg. A Roman military post stood here from around the turn of the era until about 50 AD; later a fort crowned the Lorenzberg, a steep, island-like hill in a loop of the Lech, and a village grew along the Via Claudia below. Alamannic settlers buried their dead in its ruins.
