Ab Hostilia Per Padum

Ostiglia

Ab Hostilia Per Padum, From Hostilia along the Po, is written along a straight red line that runs from Ostiglia to Ravenna in northern Italy. It is the only river journey on the map drawn like a road, with no stations and no distance figure. From Ostiglia travellers went down the Po by boat, and on to Ravenna by a dug canal. In late antiquity the state kept boats on the Po: in 467 the poet Sidonius Apollinaris, travelling on the public post from Lyon to Rome, went from Pavia to Ravenna on a post boat, and Cassiodorus tells of government boats in the time of Theoderic.
