Aballo

Avallon

Aballo is Avallon, on the road from Auxerre to Autun. The Roman register of routes writes Aballone, and Merovingian coins carry the same form. Carolingian coins read castis Avalons, the fort of Avallon, and the monk Jonas of Bobbio, in his life of Saint Columbanus, mentions the fort of Avallon too. So the name ran on without a break from the Roman road station to the medieval castle town. Older research found that the distances on either side of Aballo fit the real road well.
