Etruria

Toscana and N Lazio

Listen to the story

Etruria, the land of the Etruscans, covered roughly modern Tuscany and northern Lazio, bounded by the river Tiber and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Under Augustus it became the seventh region of Italy, and in late antiquity it was called Tuscia, the name that lives on in Tuscany. On the map the red name is written in smaller letters than usual, and a faint red i has been squeezed in between the last two letters. Whether the copyist made that correction himself or a later reader added it, no one can tell.
