Listen to the story
In the region of Egypt, the Nile and Ethiopia, the map carries a little written comment instead of a town: Flumen quidam Grin vocant, alii Nilum appellant. It means 'the river that some call Grin, others call the Nile', and it goes on to explain that the river is said to flow beneath the land of the Ethiopians into a Nile lake. The note is set in plain black letters, a rare moment where the mapmaker stops to repeat a traveller's tale about where a great river goes.
