Fines exercitus syriaticae et conmertium Barbarorum

Listen to the story

Fines exercitus syriaticae et conmertium Barbarorum is a note, not a place: it marks the limit of the Roman army based in Syria and the spot where trade with the barbarians took place. Scholars link it to the emperor Aurelian's campaign of AD 272, which destroyed the Palmyrene Empire, rather than to the rival emperor Pescennius Niger in 193. A similar remark elsewhere on the map, Areae fines Romanorum, likewise speaks of the borders of the Romans.
