People
Veneti
Listen to the story
The Veneti were a Celtic people of Armorica, whose land roughly matched the Morbihan in Brittany, with their chief town at Darioritum, now Vannes. Caesar credited them with the greatest authority along that Atlantic coast, thanks to a powerful fleet, and in 56 BC his naval commander Decimus Brutus destroyed nearly all their ships in a single sea battle. The Tabula, however, sets their name far from home, near the Seine. Scholars read this misplacement as a sign that the names of peoples belong to an older layer of the map than its road network.
