Volcae Tectosages

Listen to the story

The Volcae Tectosages were one branch of the powerful Celtic Volcae, their capital at Tolosa, which is Toulouse in southern France. Their land was famously rich in gold, and they kept their own laws rather than bowing to the Roman governor of the province. Another branch of the same people wandered east and settled in Asia Minor around Ankara. On the map, a crease in the parchment has damaged three letters of the name, yet the reading is not in doubt. The name is one of relatively few peoples placed roughly where they belong, probably from an older layer of the map going back to the age of Augustus.
