Zimises
(near Igilgili) (Barrington)
Listen to the story
The Zimises were a native people of Roman North Africa, known only from the Tabula and a single inscription from Jijel in Algeria, the ancient Igilgili. Dated AD 128, it records boundary stones set up between the people of Igilgili and the Zimises. The map places them east of Igilgili, towards the mouth of the river Ampsaga, which is not drawn, and so within Numidia, while scholars count them among the tribes of Mauretania Caesariensis. The coastal town of Ziama, the ancient Choba, may still carry their name, though it lies in the opposite direction from Igilgili.
