Lupones

Lepon

Listen to the story

The Lupones were a people of the Caucasus, placed on the map in the lands beyond the Sea of Azov. Their homeland, Lepon, lay on the western edge of today's Dagestan, which in antiquity bordered Caucasian Albania. The Roman writer Pliny describes wild tribes, the Silvi and the Lupaenii, living along the whole front of the mountains from the Albanian border. Their chief settlement appears as Lubion in the geographer Ptolemy and as Liponis in a list of places compiled in Ravenna, and it is identified with Lbnissi at the source of the Ksani river.
