Marcomanni
Listen to the story
The Marcomanni are placed along the middle Danube, which shows them as they were in the second and third centuries AD, when they were a major power on Rome's eastern frontier. Allied with other Germanic and Sarmatian peoples, they fought Rome from 166 into the early 180s in the wars named after them, under Marcus Aurelius, and in the mid third century they turned the empire's turmoil to their own advantage. Caesar still knew them on the Main; under their king Marbod they moved into the land of the Boii. Later, Marcomannic units served in the Roman army, and the people last appear in Attila's host.
