Sorvioduro

Straubing

Sorviodvro is Sorviodurum, today Straubing on the Danube in Bavaria. From the time of Vespasian four forts followed one another here on the south bank of the river, with a large village and a river harbour beside them, and traces of several practice camps have been found nearby. Destroyed in the Marcomannic Wars and rebuilt, the forts met a violent end in the later third century, and a late Roman fort followed. Cemeteries in use into the seventh century show that people stayed on into the time of the Bavarians. On the map the next distance figure is partly illegible, most likely thirty-two.
