Road station

Spelunis

Torre S. Sabina

Listen to the story

Spelunis, the caves, called Speluncae in a Roman register of routes, was a station on the last stretch of the Via Traiana near Torre Santa Sabina on the Adriatic coast, perhaps named after caves nearby. The road ran from Trajan's arch at Beneventum right across Apulia, and this was one of its last stops before Brundisium. Oddly, the map gives the distances on either side of the station but draws neither of the lines.
