Spalato

Split

Spalato is Split in Croatia, and its fame begins with Diocletian: from about 295 the emperor built his retirement palace here, a walled complex of about one hundred and eighty by two hundred and fifteen metres, part fortress, part villa, with a temple of Jupiter and its south front on the sea. He died here, as a late Roman chronicle says, in his villa near Salona. The place was older, a harbour with sulphur springs, and the name may come from the Greek aspalathos, a thorny shrub. The old town of Split still lives inside the palace walls. Oddly, the map gives it no symbol.
