Island
Insula Boa
Čiovo · Bua
Among the Mediterranean islands on the map, a single name marks Insula Boa, today Čiovo in Croatia, the island that lies beside Trogir. In antiquity it belonged, like the nearby town of Tragurium, to the people of Issa. In the fourth century the island served as a place of detention for state prisoners, and a Roman law code records exiles sent there. The Roman writer Pliny calls it Bova, while the historian Ammianus Marcellinus speaks of the Boae, an island of Dalmatia. The map’s form of the name points to late antiquity.
