Island
Insula Solentii
Šolta
Listen to the story
Insula Solentii simply means the island of Solentius, and it is Šolta, a Croatian island in the Adriatic near Split. Its name reached the map through a long line of spellings: an early Greek sailing guide called it Olynta, a Roman register of routes gives Solentia, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna has Solenta. Pliny may know it too. His manuscripts call its people either Solentini or Colentini, so his island of Colentum is probably, though not certainly, the same place.
